A Bank Identification Number (BIN) is the initial set of four to six digits on a credit or debit card, which identifies the financial institution that issued the card. The BIN helps in routing transactions to the correct card issuer for authorization and is used to prevent fraud by verifying the institution and card type. The BIN is part of the larger card number, often referred to as the Primary Account Number (PAN).
