Friendly fraud explained: Why legitimate customers become chargeback risks
If you sell online, you’ve probably had a customer dispute a payment even though everything was fine with the order. This often means friendly fraud happened with you.
But why does it happen? And how do you protect your business?
Let’s break down why legitimate customers become chargeback risks, and how you can secure digital payments.
What is friendly fraud?
Friendly fraud is payment fraud that happens when a legitimate customer makes a purchase but then files a chargeback instead of asking the merchant for a refund.
It can be intentional when a payer:
Changes their mind and now regrets the purchase;
Is unhappy about the product;
Wants to get something for free, keeping the product while trying to get their money back.
Sometimes, this kind of payment fraud happens by accident. Typical scenarios include:
A family member buys something without the cardholder's knowledge. For example, a kid buys in-game items with the card linked to the account. Their parent doesn’t recognise this charge and files a dispute.
The customer forgot about a subscription renewal or missed the cancellation deadline.
The return policy is hard to find, so the payer files a chargeback instead.
A company uses a billing name that doesn’t match its online store name; customers may not recognise the charge and file a dispute, assuming their identity was stolen.
Why does friendly fraud happen so often?
Friendly fraud is widespread and costs merchants significant revenue each year. According to a Mastercard study, global chargebacks are predicted to reach 334 million by 2028, up from 263 million in 2025.
Three main reasons stand behind frequent disputes:
Easy procedure. Customers look for instant solutions. Filing a dispute through a banking app takes a few taps, while contacting customer support may mean getting stuck in an infinite chatbot loop. If users think a chargeback will save them effort, they might file it without a second thought.
Buyer protection. The bank often sides with the buyer and approves a chargeback at the initial stage. The bank then debits the merchant's account, and the payer receives a temporary refund. If the merchant doesn’t challenge the chargeback, the customer wins automatically. It’s such a long, time-consuming process that business owners often prefer not to fight it.
A lack of awareness. Customers simply don’t realise that for a business, chargebacks aren’t just a loss of funds, but also a serious threat to reputation and even to their ability to accept online payments.
How merchants can reduce friendly fraud risks
You can’t escape friendly fraud entirely, but you can reduce it to a minimum. Here’s how you can secure your e-commerce payments:
Use clear billing descriptors. Make sure your billing descriptor matches your store name so customers can easily recognise charges and won’t mistake them for payment fraud.
Gather evidence in advance. Keep detailed transaction records and proof of delivery in case of payment fraud. It will help you win a dispute.
Provide clear product descriptions. Set realistic expectations with accurate descriptions and, if possible, photos so the purchase meets expectations.
Simplify subscription management. Notify customers before recurring charges and make subscriptions easy to cancel at any time.
Make refunds easier than chargebacks. A clear, easy-to-find return policy, plus accessible customer support, helps prevent many disputes.
